Sophie Ellis Bextor's 'identity uncovered by Masked Singer judges' during act

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has revealed three of The Masked Singer judges questioned her identity before she was booted off the show on Saturday.

The singer, 41, said the judges questioned whether she was the celebrity under the Alien costume early on in the first episode.

But judges Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and new judge Mo Gilligan chose other people as their final guesses.

The Take Me Home hitmaker said it made her realise she’d been found out.

She was unmasked as the Alien in the dramatic climax to the show after judges were left unimpressed by her performance of Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now.

Several viewers at home quickly realised it was Sophie despite her effort to hide her distinctive vocals.

When she first performed as the Alien, the judges suggested that the singer beneath the costume was Sophie Dahl, Joel Dommett’s wife Hannah Cooper, and TV detective Vera.

Their final guesses for the Alien’s identity were Lily Allen, Hannah, and Vera.

But the singer said in scenes not shown on TV three of the four judges correctly guessed her name amongst their first ideas.

And Sophie, who did not name the judges she claims identified her, confessed she knew her cover had been blown at that point.

She also admitted even her one-year-old son knew it was her as soon as she started to sing.

She said: “My kids found it absolutely hilarious that I had put on some weird accent, they were like ‘why on Earth did you do that?’.

“For me I remember last year when the show was on, saying to someone oh there is no way I could do that programme because people always say I’ve got a distinctive voice.

“So I thought I’ve got to jump in with both feet really, and play the game because it’s not really a singing competition, it’s an identity competition.

“I suppose it’s a compliment, but the fact that as soon as I opened my mouth even as the Alien my one year old, and I don’t even know how he did this, pointed at the TV and said ‘mummy’.

“Richard my husband was watching on Twitter and said, ‘yeah, everyone is saying it’s you’ and I suppose in a way that’s lovely cos you want to have a recognisable voice if you’re a singer, but I felt like I’d done quite a good job so was quite surprised!”

“They didn’t put it in the edit but three of the judges said my name on the day, so I already knew I’d been rumbled very quickly!”
