The Chase's Darragh Ennis says he was sent 'bad' messages after ITV debut

The Chase ‘s newest Chaser Darragh Ennis has revealed he received “bad” messages from viewers after his debut on the show – and his pals went out of their way to show them to him.

The Irishman, who is joining the quiz show as Ennis the Menace, appeared on This Morning with fellow Chaser Jenny Ryan to discuss his addition to the cast of brainiacs.

Hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were keen to know whether Jenny had offered Darragh any tips ahead of his series debut.

Passing on a few words of wisdom, Jenny, also known as The Vixen, recommended that Darragh stay away from Twitter after his debut episode first aired.

She said: “There are gonna be people who want to marry you immediately and there are going to be people who wish a curse upon your house.”

The flame-haired quizzer revealed she enlisted the help of her friends after her debut in 2015, asking her pals to filter through the Twitter messages before sending them her direction.

Complimenting Darragh’s charisma, Jenny added: “I’m sure most viewers are going to be so warm towards Darragh.”

However, the new Chaser confessed he had received a few nasty messages – and his friends got a laugh out of sharing them with him.

He revealed: “My friends delighted in sending me the bad news!”

The Dubliner, who also works as a neuroscience researcher at Oxford University, also admitted he was originally supposed to be named “The Professor” – but he rejected the nickname.

Darragh explained it would be seen as unprofessional in his line of work at the university, saying: “That’s a title that you really have to earn.”

Having blown producers away during his stint on the show as a contestant back in 2017, Darragh was contacted by ITV bosses weeks after his first appearance.

He explained: “I spent a very long time doing auditions and trials and training before they trusted me to get on the show.”

Now, along with Jenny, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Mark Labbett and Paul Sinha, Darragh is one of six dazzling quizzers taking on Bradley Walsh’s team of hopefuls each week – watch this space!

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV
