Vernon Kay says I'm A Celeb left him 'emotionally drained' as he missed Tess

I’m A Celebrity finalist Vernon Kay has told how being away from his family left him “emotionally drained”.

The presenter, 46, broke down in tears in the TV castle because he missed wife Tess, 51, and their two daughters so much.

Making it to Friday’s final meant being away from them for more than five weeks, as stars had to isolate for two weeks before entering the castle.

In his only interview, Vernon said: “I still cry at Forrest Gump, so I expected to cry while I was on I’m A Celebrity. I even cried in the interview I did at the start of the series.

“And when you’re in there, you are emotionally drained because you are missing your family. I felt comfortable with that group of people that I could cry. I didn’t think about trying to stop myself from getting emotional.

“You are physically drained, too. We were eating nothing but rice and beans most of the time. I lost two-and-a-half stone – that’s weight I didn’t really have to lose.”

The TV star broke into tears a number of times during the three week run of the hit ITV show.

At one point, while speaking to the camera in the bush telegraph, emotional Vernon spoke directly to his family.

He said: “Tess, I love you baby forever and ever.”

The former Family Fortunes host repeatedly talked about wanting to make his wife and daughters proud – a task that he seems to have accomplished.

He said: “Tess is so, so proud. She is just elated. She said that all three of them jumped through the roof when I got to the final. They were glued to the TV.

“That reassured me. I went in to make the girls proud and that reassured me that I’d done that.”
