Will.i.am risks backlash after comparing Trumps America to abusive relationship

The Voice UK judge and Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am has compared Donald Trump ‘s four years in the White House to an abusive relationship.

The I Gotta Feeling singer said people would only vote for the former Apprentice boss to be the President of the United States for another four years if they have lost courage.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain to Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan, Will said: “[Trump winning] that would be a very terrible thing.

“That is what happens in any abusive relationship.

“There are people who stick with their spouses and go with abuse as they don’t know how to leave.

“That doesn’t mean they are happy, it means they don’t have the courage to change as that is all they know.”

Will controversially continued: “People have settled and took the embarrassment and the ridiculous antics of how he behaviours and stirs up hate.”

The comment was quickly picked up by viewers who were left uneasy by his link to domestic abuse.

One viewer wrote: “Disgusting that #william compares @realDonaldTrump tenure like domestic abuse.

“Considering that domestic abuse has gone up over lockdowns I feel it was the wrong terminology to use irrespective if you believe that he is right. Just my opinion.”

Another added: “What does Will.i.am know about running a country?”

Will, who is a vocal supporter of Joe Biden, continued: “I feel confident as my trust is in America.

“Having had the four years we have had with so many losing loved ones and out of jobs and can’t pay their bills.

“The past nine months have been horrific for America to be a leading country but we are acting like a third world country.

“I believe people want a better and a stable four years.”

Explaining why he backs the Democratic Party, Will added: “Biden, he is part of the clean up crew.

“Remember 2008 when America was going through the economic crash.

“Obama and Biden were handed a crippled America and they handed Trump a stable America but they weren’t handed a stable America

“He knows what it takes to stabilise.

“We don’t need a distraction or an egotistical everything is about me person.”

The initial results of the 2020 US Election will start to be announced from around midnight GMT on Wednesday November 4.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
