What Music Should I Listen to in a Crisis?

With the country seemingly shuddering to a slow halt, people are hunkering down in their homes, hoping to flatten the curve of the spread of the coronavirus. But it’s easy to go stir crazy — all the tension of the extreme amount of indoor time needs to be cut with some joy.

For the Popcast team, that comes from music. On this week’s episode, we’re grateful for two gifts: great music and communion. To offer some distraction for idle ears, we’ve gathered song recommendations from a roster of Popcast favorites:

  • Hanif Abdurraqib, author of “Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest”

  • Eduardo Cepeda, Remezcla music editor

  • Justin Charity, The Ringer staff writer

  • Caryn Ganz, The New York Times’s pop music editor

  • Yoh Phillips, DJBooth staff writer

  • Ben Ratliff, visiting assistant professor at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and author of “Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways to Listen in an Age of Musical Plenty”

  • Chris Ryan, editorial director of The Ringer and co-host of The Watch podcast

  • Doreen St. Felix, The New Yorker television critic

  • Danyel Smith, author of the forthcoming “Shine Bright: A Personal History of Black Women in Popular Music”

  • Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker staff writer
