American soul singer and songwriter Willie Wright dies aged 80

Soul singer and songwriter Willie Wright has died aged 80.

The US crooner, who was due to celebrate his 81st birthday next week, began his career in the 1960s singing in doo-wop groups.

Wright is best known for his 1977 album, titled Telling the Truth, which rose to renewed prominence 34 years after it was first released.

News of his death was confirmed in a statement released on his website, reading: “We are sad to announce the passing of our dear friend and musical collaborator Willie Wright earlier this month in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.

“In addition to his family and many friends, he leaves legions of loyal fans worldwide, who will keep his unique musical legacy alive.”

Beginning his career in the 60s, Wright went on to release his debut solo album Lack of Education in 1971.

The album featured songs that he had written himself, along with several other tracks by other artists such as Sly Stone and James Taylor.

When his ’77 album Telling the Truth was reissued in 2011, it was well-received by an entirely new audience, giving his career a second wind.

Record label Numero Group first announced his death, paying tribute to Wright’s legacy as a musician with a tribute on their official Instagram page.

It included a letter the singer had written to his daughter Lisa, which read: “Lisa here is a list of things to remember, you most likely know all of these things already, this list is to remind you not to forget. From your father, William C. Garthright.”

Written as song lyrics, the letter continued: “Take time to work, it is the price of success. Take time to play, it is the secret of perpetual youth.

“Take time to think, it is the source of power, also take time to talk. Take time to read a book, it is the foundation of wisdom and knowledge. Take time to pray, it is the greatest power on earth.

“Take time to laugh, it is also the greatest power on earth. Take time to listen, it is the pathway to understanding.

“Take time to dream, it is like hitching your wagon to the stars. Take time to love and be love. It is the gift of God. Read this list from time to time.”
