Great British Bake Off ‘s brand new series began on Tuesday, and fans were divided over new presenter Matt Lucas’ during his first episode.
The 46-year-old Little Britain star joined Noel Fielding as the pair presented together for the first time.
Matt Lucas transformed into Prime Minister Boris Johnson and performed a spoof sketch of the PM giving an address to the nation, just minutes after he had done so himself.
Some viewers were unsure if this was a “necessary” move, with one writing: “Totally unnecessary opener to #GBBO keep politics out of cake please!”
While another wrote: “Matt Lucas’ spoof of Boris at the start of #GBBO was very funny, but seemed incredibly inappropriate coming straight after an actual statement from Boris.”
Others found the introduction hilarious and loved Matt as the new host.

Others gushed that he was “made for the show” in an array of complimentary messages on Twitter.
One fan tweeted: “Matt Lucas made tonight’s show. I loved Sandi don’t get me wrong, but he just adds a whole different vibe to the judging panel.”
While another gushed: “I don’t know how this show has ever worked without him before now. It’s as though it was made for him! And I just LOVE how he HAS to try every single cake. He does’t scrimp on the mouthfuls.”

The Channel 4 series has undergone some major changes due to filming in lockdown, including all of the contestants, judges and backstage team all living in a GBBO bubble for the seven week duration of filming.
Yesterday’s dramatic first episode saw a contestant named Sura in floods of tears after she accidentally knocked her fellow contestant’s cakes over while swatting away a fly.
The accident happened at the end of the technical challenge which saw the bakers make some pineapple upside-down cakes.

As they lined up to lay their baked treats on the table for judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, things took a disastrous turn.
Sura saw a fly on one of her buns, but as she swatted it away, she bumped into her co-stars Dave’s tray and knocked some of his cakes onto the floor.
She was in tears after the ordeal, but Dave was quick to reassure her it was okay, as he said: “I’m sure they can go by what they looked like before I brought them over.”
Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4
