BBC coronavirus show in chaos as programme has huge gaffe seeing host scramble

The Coronavirus Daily Update: BBC News Special returned on BBC One today, but things didn’t exactly go according to plan.

Newsreader Reeta Chakrabarti had lined up a call with the chairman of the Local Government Association, following the new coronavirus guidelines being established by Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

The programme was set to switch to the call with chairman Cllr James Jamieson, however, it appeared there was a problem with the phone-in, seeing Reeta have to quickly improvise.

The veteran news anchor started off the segment by saying: “We’re just going to go to the head of the Local Government Association, following the announcements that have just been made by the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock.

“They include an appeal for a quarter of a million volunteers to help,” Reeta then looked down and stuttered.

Realising there was a technical issue, she continued: “No, we are in fact going to get some reaction to the latest government news conference and we hear as well about how erm,” Reeta was then forced to stop what she was saying once more.

She then apologised to viewers for the ongoing hiccups.

Flashing a beaming smile at the camera, she said: “I do apologise, we are having a little trouble here working out quite where we’re going to next.”

But unfortunately the blunders didn’t stop there for Reeta.

Seemingly convinced that all of the issues had been ironed out, she said: “Right, we are going to James Jamieson, who is chairman of the Local Government Association.”

Correcting herself once more, she said: “Oh. I’m being told that maybe he’s coming…

“In fact, we’re now going to Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary.”

The programme then aired the Health Secretary’s speech.
