Bill Turnbull halts Royal debate on GMB as it 'turns into attack on Meghan Markle'

Bill Turnbull halted a Royal debate on Good Morning Britain today, as the panel discussed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest statement.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced criticism over the weekend after they issued a statement showing their apparent anger at not being allowed to use the term ‘Sussex Royal’ as a trademark outside of the UK.

In the lengthy 1,114-page statement which the couple released on Friday they outlined the new system they will be adopting from April after they made the decision to end their Royal careers.

But there has been a mixed reaction after they confirmed they will not be using the Sussex Royal brand while insisting neither the Queen nor the rest of the family has exclusive use of the term “royal.”

Speaking on GMB, Bill Turnbull, who is filling in for Piers Morgan while he is on holiday, returned to co-host with Susanna Reid as they were joined on the panel by writer Tom Bower.

Kicking off the debate, an annoyed Susanna shared her thoughts on the negative reaction, she said: “Why is it always so negative? Everything talked about Meghan is so negative?”

Tom replied: “Because of the hypocrisy. That statement was really spiteful fury by Meghan. Meghan gets what Meghan wants.

“What was spiteful was that she married into the royal family not so long ago, she knew exactly the terms. She wanted to bail out and she wants to bail out on her terms.”

He continued: “She was continuously putting out her versions of events which contradicted the actual facts and so she became a political person as much as a mother and a wife.

“When she didn’t tell the truth about the circumstances around Archie… when she tried to deliberately confuse people about the time of the birth, it was unsavoury.”

But before Tom could continue, Bill quickly shut down the debate as he deemed it an “attack on Meghan”.

Bill said: “Hold on Tom, let’s just stop for a second.

“Let’s try and get back on what we’re supposed to be talking about which, is the misuse of the brand.

“This is turning into an attack on Meghan.”

Good Morning Britain continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
