Captain Tom Moore bags No 1 spot with charitable single You'll Never Walk Alone

Captain Tom Moore has bagged the No 1 spot with his charitable single after beating off The Weeknd’s record Blinding Lights.

The WWII veteran, who has raised a staggering £28million for the NHS, teamed up with singer Michael Ball to cover You’ll Never Walk Alone.

And it’s no hard feelings as the Canadian musician previously backed the war hero on Twitter.

The Weeknd wrote: “Everyone in the UK please support Captain Tom Moore and Mr Michael Ball’s single. So this incredible 99-year-old war veteran, walking for the British National Health Service and now raised $35 Million can have a No 1 for his 100th birthday in the UK! We’re rooting for you. XO.”

Captain Tom Moore captured the hearts of the nation when he vowed to walk 100 laps of his garden at home before his 100th birthday on April 30 in a bid to raise vital funds for the NHS.

He had originally wanted to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together, but soon surpassed his total, raising a whopping £28million and rising.

On April 16 he completed his final lap flanked by officers from the Yorkshire Regiment, and told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain it was “unbelievable” the amount of money he has managed to raise and called all the donors “super people”.

His fundraiser has become the biggest in JustGiving history, and to thank him for his do-good initiative, he will receive a Pride of Britain award.

Appearing on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain, show host Carol Vorderman took Captain Tom by surprise as she revealed he will receive an award, which honours British people who have acted bravely or extraordinarily in challenging situations.

“It might not surprise you we’ve had that many nominations for you to win a Pride of Britain award and before you argue about it, I want to tell you why,” Carole told Tom and his daughter via video link.

“We’ve given out Pride Of Britain awards to children with tremendous courage, and to many members of our armed services.

“Frankly you Captain Tom embody all of that, your kindness, your modesty you utter determination and your selflessness because you’re raising money, frankly a ridiculous amount of money, you keep saying it’s not for you and it’s for those you regard as heroes.

“I’ve got something that is for you, this will be your Pride Of Britain award, sent to you with love.

Tom, overcome with emotion, responded: “I can’t be more proud and in a position to receive it from you, you are so very kind and I thank all of the people who nominated me for this award.

“I’m very very humbled at receiving magnificent award, thank you very very much. I’m taken aback by this, because I know it’s such a prestigious award that people get.”
