Caroline Flack admitted 'whacking' boyfriend – but didn't want to hurt him

The inquest into the death of Caroline Flack resumed today.

The 40-year-old former Love Island and X Factor star was found hanged at her home in Stoke Newington, north-east London, on February 15.

The inquest heard that at the scene Caroline told officers she ‘whacked’ Lewis but didn’t mean to cause harm.

She told officer at the scene: “I did it. I whacked him round the head.

“I admit I did it. I used the phone. I had his phone in one hand and mine in the other.

“I whacked him round the head. There was no excuse for it. I was just upset. I admit I did it.”

But in interview DI Bateman said Caroline said she `flicked’ Lewis in a bid to wake him up. She thought she might have dropped the phone on his head. But she did not believe she caused the injury. She did not know how it had happened.

Bateman said: “It sounded like she was saying it was an accident, not an assault.”

The coroner suggested the accounts are similar.

“Were you not splitting hairs there?” the coroner asks.

DI Bateman said she did not accept that, saying: “In my view it was not a clear reliable admission of what had happened.”

The coroner asked if Caroline was reminded in interview what she had said at the scene.”

Bateman: “I can’t answer that. I wasn’t the interviewing officer. I don’t know what was said verbatim.”

The inquest heard Caroline also said in interview: “I admit I did it. I never hit him over the head. It was a sideways hit. He was never hit over the head. It was reckless. I whacked him. It wasn’t aggressive. The whole thing feels very blurry.”

Caroline said the phone must have hit Burton on the head.

The hit was a `four or five’ – a `wake-up flick’.

She felt `horrible’ when she saw the blood. She had not wanted to hurt him. That was not her intention.

Bateman said: “It was not clear what Caroline was saying had happened.”

A detective said you could not cause an injury like that by dropping a phone.

The coroner then said: “If you were presented with the same situation tomorrow would you do anything differently.”

Bateman replied: “No, absolutely not.”
