Clare Balding heartbroken as beloved dog Archie dies aged 15

Sports broadcaster Clare Balding has paid an emotional tribute to her dog Archie, after he sadly died at the age of 15.

Clare, who shared the Tibetan terrier with wife Alice Arnold, shared the news with fans on Twitter – and has since seen an outpouring of love and support.

Sharing a string of snaps of lovely Archie, as well as one of herself and Archie taking him on a walk, she wrote: “I am so sad to tell you that our beloved Archie has walked his last walk.

“@alicearnold1 and I are broken-hearted but grateful to him for the joy that he gave us, the places he took us and the friends he brought us.

“We miss him so much. RIP Archie 2005-2020.”

“Oh so sorry Clare,” one follower commented, “That face. What fun you all had, eh?”

Another offered: “Oh Clare and Alice. I’m heartbroken for you. RIP Archie xxx.”

A third penned: “I am so sorry for your loss, if there aren’t dogs in heaven then I’m not going. If I get there before you I’ll give Archie an ear-diggle xxx.”

Clare has always been very public with her deep love for her canine companion.

In 2012, writing for the Waitrose Weekend Magazine, she told: “Archie is nearly always pleased to see me, unless he’s cross with me for being away at something meaningless in this world – like The Olympics – in which case he ignores me for a few minutes and then can’t help himself making strange squeaky noises and giving me a cuddle.

“Archie is not an heroic dog. He is not even a particularly well-behaved dog but he is our dog and I love him.”

Well known as an animal lover, her passion has found its way into her work as well.

She hosts Crufts Extra, alongside Alan Carr, and even started a podcast for dog-lovers, Dogcast with Clare Balding.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to talk about dogs to all sorts of experts and dog-lovers,” she enthused, “who would like to share advice and tips on training and great stories about how dogs have changed their lives.

“Some you’ll have heard of, and some you won’t, but my aim for the podcast is for it to be the perfect companion as you walk your dog.”
