Coronation Street star Antony Cotton may be one of the most recognised faces in soapland but it doesn’t stop his mum giving him a good telling off when he gets the giggles on set.
Antony, who has played Weatherfield knicker stitcher Sean Tully in the ITV soap since 2004, has teamed up with his mother Enid Dunn for a series of Gogglebox-style videos as part of Plusnet’s new campaign That’ll Do.
Enid, who previously appeared in Peter Kay’s hit comedy Phoenix Nights, told her actor son: “You’re not too big for a slap, Antony. In front of these I don’t care” in a hilarious clip launched on Wednesday as Antony bursted into laughter on set.
Antony, 45, also opened up about his love for bagging a good deal, despite being one of the country’s most successful television stars.
The soap star said: “I love nothing better than the thrill of a good deal.

“My late great pal, Joan Rivers, gave me the best piece of advice on that.
“She told me ‘When you check into a hotel never accept the first room they give you’.”
He continued: “A few years ago I was in a very posh hotel in America and the lady on reception was telling me all about the history of the building.
“She talked about this observatory on the top. And I said, ‘What else is up there?’ And she said, ‘It’s the penthouse suite.’

“I said, ‘How much is that a night?’ And she told me and it was literally a mortgage amount of money.”
Antony later decided to work his Northern charm to see if he could bag the room upgrade.
“I asked:’ What’s the chance of me going up there?’ And she said, ‘I’m sorry. No, sir, it doesn’t quite work like that.’

“So, off I went to my hotel room that I’d booked and paid for. And as I walked in the room, the phone went and the receptionist was on the other end and said: ‘Don’t unpack your bags. We’re going to take you straight up’
“Obviously my northern charm had worked. And we went in, the doors opened. I saw the room and I thought, ‘That’ll do’.”
On screen Antony, who first found fame in Channel 4 series Queer as Folk in the late 90s, has just kicked off one of his biggest Corrie storylines to date with the return of his son Dylan, who made his first appearance on the cobbles last week.
Antony has revealed he is looking forward to celebrating 18 years in Weatherfield next summer.
“I’m in my 18th year on Corrie. When I first joined I thought I’d do three months and that’d be it,” he explained.
“It feels like I fell asleep and woke up and I’m in my 18th year. It’s flown by.”
Coronation Street continues on ITV on Wednesday at 7.30pm and 8.30pm
