Danny Cipriani says he tried to buy gun to kill himself as he discusses Caroline Flack

Danny Cipriani has said he tried to buy a gun to kill himself as he bravely opened up about his battle with mental health.

The 32-year-old posted an emotional monologue to his 210,000 Instagram followers about his struggles days after close friend Caroline Flack took her own life on February 15.

During the emotional 18-minute video, the England rugby star shared his story in an attempt to encourage other people to open up about their own mental health struggles.

Discussing his friendship with Caroline, he explained she made him “feel safe,” as he admitted to sharing “vulnerable” moments with her.

In the clip, he spoke about how he battled with severe depression when he was 22, and it was at that point he decided he wanted to take his own life.

“When I was 22 I was going through depression and I was seeing a psychiatrist,” he said.

“So I met a guy at my friend’s nightclub, and I knew he was a bad man, and he was in ‘the scene’ trying to make his way in whatever he was doing.

“I decided at that point it was time to take my own life – and I decided to buy a gun off him.”

“And I pulled out of it, and I tried to buy it, and then I pulled out of it, and then I tried to buy it – and it went on for two months.”

He added: “And I couldn’t do it, because I had some fight in me.

“I want to share my experiences because I told them to her – and I hope that gave her some light. Ultimately, it was not enough.

“I’m trying to say it’s ok to be vulnerable. It doesn’t matter what people say about you.”

Breaking down in tears, he urged everyone to “be kind” and come together as “everyone is dealing with embarrassment and shame to some sort of degree”.
