EastEnders Shona McGarty confirms Whitney set for heartbreak after prison horror

EastEnders ‘ Whitney Dean has had a rough few months, from her failed engagement to Callum Highway (Tony Clay) to her recent stint in prison.

In emotional scenes last month, Whitney was released from prison, returning to Albert Square having been proven innocent of Leo King’s (Tom Wells) murder.

Sadly, it seems there’s even more heartbreak for the market-stall owner ahead, as Shona McGarty confirmed there’s drama to come.

Speaking to Metro, the 28-year-old actress opened up about Whitney’s fate, predicting more tears will be shed.

She said: “Things are definitely going to get worse for Whitney. It’s going to be another tough few weeks ahead. But Whit is strong, a survivor.”

The Hertfordshire-born actress also praised the production team for their treatment of Whitney’s prison storyline, which saw her hallucinate and go on hunger strike.

Earning heapings of praise from viewers thanks to her powerful performance, Shona admitted to crying when she first read her script for the prison scenes.

She said: “I enjoy playing every scene as Whitney on the show.

“But I have thoroughly enjoyed playing Whitney’s journey through her hunger strike in prison. When I read the script for the first time, I cried. It was truly moving writing.”

The soap star was thankful the storyline reflected on Whitney’s past, including her grooming at the hands of paedophile Tony King (Chris Coghill).

She said: “I was glad it touched on Whitney’s abusive childhood. I think it’s so important to remind the audience of the terrible start she had, how strong she’s had to be, and how she’s had to grow up well before her time.

“I believe her abuse has triggered many bad relationships and mistakes she’s made going forward. It’ll be with her forever.”

With filming of EastEnders cancelled for the foreseeable future, will we have to wait longer than expected to see Whitney’s luck change?

EastEnders now airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on BBC One at 8pm.
