Elton John 'saw God' after smoking weed during late-night music session

Elton John has opened up about an apparent brush with deity, admitting he believed he “saw God” after smoking cannabis and listening to music full blast.

The Rocket Man says he spent one evening listening to electronic dance music and thought he was taken to a higher place.

Elton, 73, who has been sober for decades, says he blasted German dance album Trans-Europe Express by Kraftwerk before rolling a joint.

Speaking as candidly as ever about the 1975 album on his Apple Music series Rocket Hour, Elton said: “I love that because it was the first record I ever heard that really sounded German as far as pop music went.

“It just is a seminal record in electronic music.

“I think their album Trans-Europe Express it’s one of my all-time favourite records.

“I remember smoking a joint and listening to it on really loudspeakers and I thought I saw God during that album.”

Over the years Elton has spoken candidly about his use of drugs – though has been sober now for 30 years.

Taking to Instagram in July 2019, Elton wrote: “29 years ago today, I was a broken man.

“I finally summoned up the courage to say three words that would change my life: ‘I need help.’

“Thank you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful.”

While Elton’s own music’s about as far away from German dance as you can get, the British music icon recently dipped his toe in the electronic genre thanks to his collab with Lady Gaga.

The close friends teamed up on Gaga’s Chromatica album track Sine From Above much to the delight of shocked fans who were expecting a piano ballad.
