Emmerdale fans could be about to see Gabby Thomas’ unlikely friendship with Leyla Harding take a chilling turn, as they begin to work together in the salon.
Actress Rosie Bentham has revealed Gabby will see her secrets “exposed” in upcoming scenes, as does everything in her power to keep beautician Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) close.
The pair formed a friendship after Gabby’s mother Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) upped and left, leading the teen to act out with drunken nights and stroppy outbursts.
Recent episodes have seen Gabby drive a wedge through Leyla’s relationship with Dr Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson), deleting his text messages in an effort to break them up.
Speaking about Gabby’s increasingly concerning behaviour, actress Rosie, 19, said: “I don’t think this lying is going to ease away.”
Teasing drama to come, she added: “There’s a big surprise coming up – yeah, Gabby does get closer. Her plan works.
“But she has lied along the way – secrets can only be secret for so long.”
Watching Gabby and Leyla’s intense friendship unfold, certain viewers have speculated whether a romance could be on the cards between the pair, as the teen appears increasingly obsessed with her older female friend.
However, Rosie put any romance rumours to bed, insisting their quickly intensifying relationship is more maternal than sexual in nature.
She said: “I personally think it has been a friendship, mother, sister figure – it’s a Single White Female thing, she’s jealous of her and gets a bit clingy.
“She’s copying her style and the way she dresses and speaks. She looks up to her as an idol. I don’t think her mum would have been an idol. It’s a mother-sister rather than a crush.”
Working alongside one another in the salon, Gabby’s dependence on Leyla is only going to increase tenfold in upcoming scenes, as the truth threatens to come out.
Rosie explained: “I think it’s clear she’s very open to sabotaging anything to get her own way. She does go very far… obviously, she has lied a lot, deleted texts but lies can only be kept secret for a certain amount of time.
“But she really does not want Leyla and Liam together. She doesn’t like seeing Leyla upset but she can’t afford to lose her, she will lose her job, be on her own. Leyla has created a whole life for her.”
As Gabby’s scheming ramps up, her social status comes under threat, as she risks making too many enemies in the sleepy Yorkshire village.
Rosie added: “Definitely, she is in danger of being too meddling. She doesn’t think about her actions at all – she sees it as a one-way road to get her own road.”
Can Gabby maintain her friendship with Leyla, or will her controlling behaviour only serve to isolate her further?
Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with a second helping on Thursdays at 8pm
