Googlebox fans were in for a treat the evening as the Channel 4 favourite returned to our screens with a celebrity edition.
A host of Britain’s best loved personalities turned their hand to being telly critics tonight as they reacted to the latest shows on the box.
Celebrity Gogglebox saw the return of Radio 1 Dj Nick Grimshaw and his niece Liv, Denise van Outen and her partner Eddie and former EastEnders actor Martin Kemp and his former I’m A Celeb contestant son Roman.
There were plenty of new famous faces too as Loose Women star Stacey Solomonand her Dancing On Ice champion boyfriend Joe Swash joined in the fun as well as football favourite Harry Redknapp and his wife Sandra.
While some Gogglebox fans were delighted to see the celebrities appear on their favourite show, others were quick to accuse the stars of breaking the government’s two-metre social distancing rule as the coronavirus lockdown continues.
Taking to Twitter, one angry fan penned: “So why the celebs sitting in each others houses and I stood outside in the cold, social distancing, talking to my kids last night?”
Another added: “Where’s the social distancing on Celebrity Gogglebox? These guys don’t live together!. They’re not supposed to be indoors?”
A third posted: “The Channel 4 announcer said before the show ‘following social distancing guidelines’ but they absolutely f***ing aren’t. I’m not allowed my nan in my living room, regardless of how far away from me she remains.”
A fourth ranted: “So I can’t go into my Grandma’s house, even at a distance, but these celebrities can go into each other’s households and be paid to watch TV?! Ok then… and you announced you’re sticking to the social distancing guidelines? OK THEN…”
In line with health and safety concerns due to the coronavirus pandemic, Studio Lambert has changed the way Gogglebox is filmed.
Normally there would be a crew in another room in the house operating the cameras but due to the lockdown measures, households can no longer invite the camera crew in.
Instead, the stars of the show have been given stationary cameras they can switch on themselves.
Ian Katz, Channel 4’s director of programming, explained how the crew sit in vans located outside the homes to operate the camera.
To limit all necessary contact between the stars and crew, toilet facilities have also been installed outside contributor’s homes.
Mr Katz said: “It quite quickly became a battle to keep key productions up and running.”
He continued: “And one of the things I’m so proud of is the way we were able to identify key productions for us and keep them on air.
“One of the real miracles has been the way Gogglebox has stayed on air.”
Celebrity Gogglebox continues on Channel 4 on Friday at 9pm
