John Legend pays emotional tribute to Chrissy Teigen following tragic baby loss

John Legend made an emotional return to the stage for the first time since the tragic loss of his newborn son Jack at the Billboard Music Awards 2020 on Wednesday.

The singer, 41, dedicated his performance to his wife Chrissy Teigen, as they continue to grieve the loss of their child.

The All Of Me hitmaker sang Never Break from his 2020 album Bigger Love and he said: “This is for Christ” as he sat behind the piano at the empty Dolby Theatre in LA.

John’s voice was close to cracking as he sang the lyrics: “I’m not worried about us and I’ve never been.

“We know how the story ends. We will never break.”

The awards ceremony was hosted by Kelly Clarkson who praised John and Chrissy’s strength in the light of their personal tragedy.

Introducing the performance, Kelly, 38, said: “He and Chrissy both have this warm way of inviting us into their world. The highs and the lows.

“My heart – obviously all of our hearts – go out to you both in this very difficult time.

“And I’m thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us.”

After the performance, Kelly said the moment had been “very special” and was “possibly my favourite of the night”.

The ceremony had been postponed from April due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Supermodel Chrissy shared the tragic news in an emotional Instagram post on September 30.

Accompanied by a series of black and white photos of her grieving in hospital, she wrote: “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before.

“We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

The 34-year-old model shared that she and John already named the son that they lost.

Chrissy continued: “We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital.

“But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us.

“Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”

After apologising to Jack for not being able to provide “the home you needed to survive,” Chrissy went on to thank her friends and followers for their support during her time in the hospital.

She also acknowledged all that she is grateful for in her life, including her two children: Luna, 4, and two-year-old Miles.
