Kate Garraway fumes as Trump calls Covid 'blessing' amid Derek's fight for life

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway was stunned to hear the US President Donald Trump describe catching coronavirus “as a blessing.”

Trump tested positive for coronavirus last week and spent three days in hospital but appears to be recovering well after appearing in a number of videos.

He said in his latest one: “I think this was a blessing from God that I caught it.”

Kate said on the show today: “Blessing from God. The idea of getting a fateful disease with no confident cure at the moment as any kind of blessing from God is such a strange thing to say.”

Kate shared her horror after hearing Trump call coronavirus a “blessing”

Her husband Derek was first admitted into hospital seven months ago, and whilst he is now coronavirus-free, the disease has left significant damage on his major organs.

He remains in a minimum state of consciousness after being taken out of a medically induced coma.

Kate continued: “If I’m trying to be fair to him, does he mean it’s a blessing because he understands the impact? He’s now used himself as a trial for some of these things?

Kate declared that Trump should be setting an example to the US public

“That’s a nice way you’d hope he’d be saying it but it completely ignores the fact that those things that are tried and tested aren’t as accessible…

“You can’t say something’s a blessing when more than 200,000 people in your own country and more than a million worldwide have died from it.

“It’s not the way we hope our elected representatives feel. You’d hope they can sense the horror before they actually go through it.”

She continued: “The strong leadership position at this point would be to publicly follow the rules… and be a beacon of how to behave.”

Kate opened up about her frustration earlier this week after revealing her children with Derek, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, haven’t seen their dad in seven months.

Derek’s parents also haven’t been able to see their son due to regulations in the hospital, as Kate said having his family close to him “could be of real benefit to him”.

GMB continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
