Kate Garraway praises brave Covid vaccine volunteers as Derek fights in hospital

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway shared her praise for the volunteers being infected with coronavirus for the vaccine trials as her husband Derek remains in hospital.

Kate, 53, also worried for those who were offering to contract the illness as she spoke to Dr Amir Khan along with Ranvir Singh.

She said: “There is a new trial, which we were all surprised about, taking part at Oxford University.

“The interesting thing is they’re calling for healthy volunteers to be infected with Covid now.

“I didn’t think that was happening, I mean, it’s a brave volunteer who does that.”

Dr Amir then talked the two presenters through the facts around the “human challenge” programme, which will see healthy people between 18 and 30 take part in the challenge.

He said: “It’ll be under very controlled circumstances to find out how much of the virus is needed to cause the infection.

“They are slowly going to expose them to small quantities of the virus to see what the threshold is, which might help with a vaccine.

“They will be monitoring these people very carefully, it’ll be very controlled, and there’ll be rescue medication should any of them get sick.”

Kate, who is clearly still worried about her ill husband Derek, who was first admitted to hospital at the end of March, said: “When you say very controlled, it’s a disease that we don’t fully understand.

“So they could be watching you very carefully and then suddenly you can be one of those unfortunate people that suddenly develop symptoms that we still don’t have a cure for.”

Dr Amir conceded: ” It’s a trial, things can go wrong. They’re very brave volunteers who will go forward for it.”

Kate shared an update on her husband Derek last week as she was comforted by her co-star Susanna Reid on the show.

She said: “I’m doing ok… the problem is, is that I feel I’m just boring everyone to death. It’s the same thing, he’s stable.

“In between, there’s big ups and big downs – well, not big ups, small improvements.

“The last few days have been pretty stable, so fingers crossed, really.”

GMB continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
