Kate Garraway sends hugs to fans for kind messages as husband fights for life

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway expressed her heartfelt thanks after well wishes sent her messages of support while her husband Derek Draper continues to battle covid-19.

Draper, 52, a former lobbyist and political adviser, was taken to hospital at the end of March, and remains critically ill in intensive care.

The ITV host has stepped down from her presenting duties in order to spend time with her family, but during this emotional time has kept fans updated with Derek’s progress.

As well as social media posts, and her fellow presenters on GMB reading out her letters, the mum-of-two has penned words on her personal blog.

During her latest post, Kate thanked her followers for their kind messages of support.

Kate shared: “I wanted to send a huge thank you to all of you who have sent me such wonderful messages wishing Derek well. It has meant the world to me.

“I am sorry I have not been able to reply to them individually, as I am sure you will understand that I am focusing on my family and Derek right now.”

“In quieter moments I am reading all of your messages and they are so comforting and wonderful to read.”

Katie’s emotional message comes days after her GMB co-host Piers Morgan warned people not to get “complacent” as the UK struggles to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

With people now allowed to spend ample time outdoors, take part in sports and drive for country walks in line with the new lockdown rules, the 53-year-old informed his Twitter followers they should not brush off the seriousness of the situation.

Taking to the social media platform, he wrote: “We won’t beat COVID-19 by all feeling jolly and streaming out of lockdown on Monday. Especially when the UK’s coronavirus infection and death rates then rocket up again.

“I wonder if those most complacent about this virus are the ones least personally touched by it?

“A great friend of mine lost her mother to it, a cousin lost his dad, another great friend’s mum narrowly survived, and my colleague Kate Garraway’s husband is fighting for his life.”

GMB continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
