Kate Garraway told Derek 'will be fine' by Covid-19 survivor in emotional chat

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway was told by a coronavirus survivor that her husband Derek will recover – but she warned he “isn’t through the woods yet”.

Kate and her co-star Ben Shephard spoke to survivor Anil Patel, 63, who spent 149 days in intensive care with coronavirus before being moved to a rehab facility just days ago.

In comparison, Derek has reportedly become the longest suffering coronavirus patient after spending nearly 200 days in hospital after first falling ill back in March.

Speaking from his bed, Anil discussed his own harrowingly battle with deadly virus before asking Kate about her husband Derek’s situation.

He asked: “I hear Kate’s husband is ill as well like me. Is he OK now?”

Kate replied: “No, he’s still fighting on like you. So not through the woods yet but thank you so much for thinking of that.”

Anil told her: “He will be fine, Kate.”

Kate responded: “Will he? That is a lovely thought. Thank you for saying that.”

Anil insisted: “And I wish him really well.”

Ben chipped in during the emotional moment, adding: “That sort of positivity we continue to get is the embodiment of what happens when the NHS comes together and works really hard.”

Fans rushed to social media to comment on the emotional moment as they praised Anil for his kind words towards Kate.

One wrote: “Awww Anil on @GMB asking after @kategarraway husband Derek, 156 days in hospital with covid himself and he says Derek will be fine to Kate, wee soul.”

Another added: “Get well soon Mr Patel. Made me cry when he asked how Kate’s husband is. What a kind caring lovely man thinking of others.”

Derek was first admitted into hospital at the end of March and remains there now in a minimum state of consciousness after being taken out of a medically induced coma.

Kate has shared her despair at their children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, not being able to see their father for the last seven months, despite him no longer having coronavirus.

Not only that, Derek’s parents also haven’t been able to visit due to regulations, as Kate worried that their presence with him could “be of a great benefit” to his recovery.

GMB continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
