Kate Garraway's kids haven't seen dad Derek in 6 months as he stays in hospital

Kate Garraway has opened up about the family’s final day of normality before husband Derek Draper was taken into hospital following his coronavirus diagnosis.

The former political lobbyist was rushed to hospital in March after contracting Covid-19, and remains in intensive care with no sign of him being discharged anytime soon.

Katie, who shares two children, Darcey, 14, and 11-year-old Billy, with her husband, recalled the day prior to Derek’s frantic hospital dash, revealing they dropped Billy at a dance class while Darcey was with pals, so the couple enjoyed a spot of brunch.

Due to visiting restrictions, their children are unable to see Derek while he remains in hospital, but Kate has been allowed to see Derek occasionally.

“We had such a lovely time – we’d been waiting ages to put in sliding patio doors to our back garden – not a very rock and roll or romantic topic for brunch, I know, but we were so excited about the chance to make plans,” she told You magazine.

“After we discussed that, Derek said, ‘I fear a lockdown is coming; while we’re in isolation it’s a good time to print out the photos of the kids to put on the wall.’ So then we went to B&Q to get some picture frames.”

24-hours later, Derek started to feel under the weather, and because he wasn’t showing symptoms of coronavirus – including a high temperature and a continuous cough – he thought it was the side effect to some painkillers he was taking for a shoulder injury.

His condition dramatically deteriorated, and a worried Kate rang GMB’s resident GP Dr Hilary Jones, who asked to listen to Derek’s breath during the call, and urged Kate to call 999.

He was swiftly taken to hospital and, around that time, he was seemed to be in a stable condition, with him texting Kate about what the doctors told him.

“One of the last texts I have from him says, ‘The doctor says the lung X-ray is looking positive, I’m definitely not going to die,'” Kate said.

Derek was taken out of his medically induced coma in June, and has managed to regain the lowest form of consciousness, with doctors warning Kate it’s going to be a long road to recovery for her husband.

While Derek is now free of the virus, the bug has wrecked extraordinary damage on his body, leaving him with organ, cell and blood vessel damage.

Kate admitted that she was shocked by Derek’s appearance during a FaceTime call, as he has lost eight stone in weight and had dark circles under his eyes.
