Laura Whitmore has confirmed Love Island will be returning – with more applications than ever – after the summer series was axed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 35-year-old presenter, who hosted the most recent winter series of the show, appeared on Lorraine this morning to discuss the Love Island comeback.
Chatting with presenter Christine Lampard, she said: “It will come back bigger and better than ever. I have been told there has been an overwhelming amount of applications for next year.”
Laura added that ITV will be taking safety very seriously on the new series, saying: “I just think that show is such a great and such a big show but it has to be done in the right way.
“When it comes back it will come back the right way.”
Love Island was due to air in June, but ITV bosses decided to cancel the summer series to protect the health of the cast and crew.
Back in May, a statement from ITV’s director of television, Kevin Lygo, read: “We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority.

“In normal circumstances, we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.”
ITV later confirmed the 2021 winter series would also get the chop, pushing the show’s return date to the following summer.
The radio DJ, who recently launched her new podcast Dating Hall of Fame, spent the lockdown with her beau and fellow Love Island star Iain Stirling.
Celebrating their three-year anniversary together, Laura revealed they were delighted to take a break from their hectic work schedules and spend the day together.
She said: “Normally he would be out doing Love Island at that time.
“This was the first time we were like ‘oh we have the whole day’.”
Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV .
