Love Island and Strictly lead BAFTA TV nominations for 2020 ceremony

The BAFTA TV nominations for the 2020 award ceremony have been announced, with Strictly Come Dancing, Love Island and Killing Eve due to lead the event.

Unlike other years – where the red carpet reigned supreme – the ceremony will be a closed event with winners accepting their prizes virtually.

News the ceremony is going ahead will come as a shock to many, as it was originally postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The ceremony will now take place on Friday, July 31 and will be broadcast on BBC One later that evening.

Making light of the situation, the ceremony’s host Richard Ayoade said: “I am as surprised as you are that this is still going ahead.”

Similarly rescheduled due to the pandemic, the British Academy Television Craft Awards will take place on July 17, hosted by Stephen Mangan.

Confirming the news, Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive at BAFTA, said: “We are delighted to confirm the new dates and formats for both the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards and the British Academy Television Craft Awards this year.

“We want to celebrate and reward the talented individuals who make up the television industry, both behind and in-front of the camera, many of whom have continued to entertain and inform the nation in recent weeks.

“I am thrilled that Richard Ayoade will be hosting the Television Awards for the first time, with Stephen Mangan joining us for a ninth time to host the Television Craft Awards, with them at the helm both events are set to be great entertainment…”

The TV nominations were announced yesterday, with royal Netflix drama The Crown up for seven awards.

Fleabag, starring and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, landed an impressive four nominations, as did Japanese/British Netflix series Girl/Haji.

Other popular shows from the past year, such as His Dark Materials, The Virtues, Killing Eve, Sex Education and Top Boy, are also in the running.

On top of that, Coronation Street fans were thrilled to hear that Katie McGlynn is up for an award, thanks to her emotional exit from the cobbles last year.

Celebrating the news, she said: “To find out we’re nominated for a BAFTA – we are all just beyond thrilled.

“We’re over the moon. Especially because after the NTAs it was a great start to the year, and then all of this [coronavirus] happened, so I just assumed that would be it then and I wouldn’t hear more after the big story last year.

“Because I assumed everything would be cancelled and moving on to the next job.

“So to find out we’d been nominated for a BAFTA, we are so happy. Everyone worked so hard on this story.

“The cast, the crew, the writers, the researchers.”
