Meghan Markle dons leather trousers on AGT as she supports contestant Archie

Meghan Markle appeared on US television on Wednesday in a rare moment after being somewhat out of the public eye for months.

The 39-year-old Duchess of Sussex made a cameo appearance on the final of America’s Got Talent to wish a contestant named Archie Williams good luck.

Meghan, who was dressed in a smart beige shirt and leather trousers, revealed that herself and Prince Harry had been “cheering him on every week” and were “rooting for him” – and not just because he has the same name as their 1-year-old son.

The Sussexes are said to be fans of the programme, and Archie was overwhelmed when host Terry Crews introduced the message from Meghan.

Meghan appeared on the huge video screen behind them. She said: “I just wanted to let you know that we’ve been so moved by your story, and we have been cheering you on every week, and it’s not just because we’re partial to the name.

“So a very special message to you that I will probably be saying all of my life, but on this night it is specifically for you: Archie, we are proud of you, and we are rooting for you, and we can’t wait to see what you do. We’re in your corner.”

Archie, who poignantly sang “Blackbird” by The Beatles during the live final, was previously imprisoned for 37 years for a crime he didn’t commit.

He was finally freed in March 2019 after the Innocence Project took up his case, and fought for decades to prove he was innocent.

Archie said singing was his source of refuge, as he explained: “When I was faced with dark times I would pray and sing. This is how I got peace.”

Also last night, the Duchess broadcasted on the first-ever Time100 TV special alongside Prince Harry.

Imploring viewers to vote, she said: “Every four years, we’re told the same thing: that this is the most important election of our lifetime. But this one is.

“When we vote our values are put into action, and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter—because you do—and you deserve to be heard.”
