Netflix doc American Murder: The Family Next Door leaves viewers 'sickened'

Netflix viewers have been moved to tears by the latest documentary to be added to the streaming service, titled American Murder: The Family Next Door.

The true crime documentary follows the devastating disappearance of Shanann Watts and her two young daughters in Colorado, and the subsequent arrest of her husband for their murders.

At first, her husband Chris Watts issued impassioned pleas for his wife’s return, only for police to learn he was the culprit.

After the story gripped the US in 2018, Chris Watts was convicted with the murder of his pregnant wife Shanann and their daughters, who were aged just three and four at the time of their deaths.

Watts, 35, disposed of their bodies at an oil plant 40 miles from their home, and was later handed five life sentences for the murders.

Using police footage combined with interviews from those close to the family, along with personal footage of Shanann and her children, the film traces the events before and after the devastating crime.

In found-footage featured in the trailer, Shannon could be heard praising her husband, saying: “I went through one of the darkest times of my life, and then I met Chris and he’s the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

Promoting the documentary, a statement from Netflix read: “Shanann Watts and her two young daughters went missing in Frederick, Colorado.

“As details of their deaths made headlines worldwide, it became clear that Shanann’s husband, Chris Watts, wasn’t the man he appeared to be.

“Experience a gripping and immersive examination of the disintegration of a marriage.”

Once the documentary debuted on Netflix on September 30, viewers were both moved by the devastating scenes, and sickened by the crimes that took place.

“Takes a lot to bring me to tears. But the last 15mins of this has broken me. I actually shed a few tears and not an emotional guy, but this got me…” added a second.

And a third wrote: “I’m sick to my stomach over this Netflix documentary ‘American Murder: The Family Next Door.”
