Normal People author Sally Rooney 'being pestered by BBC to write second series'

Normal People author Sally Rooney is reportedly being pestered to come up with a sequel to her lockdown hit, Normal People – which has become BBC Three’s most streamed show ever.

BBC bosses are said to be “desperate” to roll out a second series of the raunchy show which featured 12 episodes and 41 minutes of steamy sex scenes in its first season.

It is believed BBC bosses are in talks with Sally about continuing the plot of the coming of age show, which ended at the same point as the book and has racked up 16million views already.

Insiders claim it is hoped Marianne and Connell, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, will feature in a new storyline.

A source told The Sun: “The BBC are desperate to get going on series two. The viewing numbers are huge and they want more of the same.

“They want to strike while the iron is hot and get working on the series as soon as possible.

“Their hope is to roll out the series in a similar time frame to Killing Eve. But it all depends on if they can get Sally Rooney on board.”

The series is based on Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel about the turbulent relationship between working-class Connell (Mescal) and well-heeled Marianne Sheridan (Edgar-Jones).

The show’s executive producer Lenny Abrahamson previous told of his interest in the series making a comeback.

He said: “I have a fantasy of doing a kind of 10-year… you know, seeing where they are in 10 years’ time sort of thing. It’d be good.”

The show has been praised for its unflinching take on sexuality ever since it was released on iPlayer.

In one of the show’s raunchiest scenes Connell and Marianne sleep together after reconnect in Dublin after they moved away for university.

It culminates with the pair lying naked on a bed, with Connell going full frontal.

Not to be outdone, though, Marianne decides to take a nude selfie for her lover later in the episode.
