Actress Shirley Knight has died aged 83, her daughter said in a statement.
The Oscar-nominated star died today from natural causes.
Shirley’s daughter Kaitlin Hopkins took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news of her mum’s death.
A statement read: “Early this morning April 22nd you passed away, and your sweet soul left us for a better place. I was at your side and you went peacefully.
To me, you were ‘just mom’, to some you were ‘Miss Knight’, ‘Miss Shirley’, ‘Mama Shirley’ (to my students), ‘Shirl the Girl’ (to your friends), and ‘Shirley Knight’ to your fans.”
Knight was nominated for two Oscars during the early stages of her career before going on to land several film, TV and stage roles.

Her first Academy Award recognition came shortly after her second role as an Oklahoman woman in love with a Jewish man in the 60s film version of William Inges’ play, The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs – she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
Shirley was later nominated for Best Supporting Actress just two years later for her role in the 1962 hit film, Sweet Bird of Youth – based on the Tennesse Williams play.

During her career, she was also nominated for two Tony awards and took one home.
Recently, she had bagged several Emmy nominations for her role as Phyllis Van de Kamp in ABC’s hit show Desperate Housewives, alongside Eva Longoria.
She leaves behind her two daughters, Sophie Jacks, Kaitlin Hopkins and her step-daughter Justine.
A memorial service will be held in Los Angeles in the early months of next year.
