Piers Morgan slams GMB guest over Covid-19 comments amid Kate Garraway heartache

Piers Morgan has knocked actor Dominic West after he made “insensitive” comments about coronavirus on Friday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain.

Joining Kate Garraway and Adil Ray on the show, the 50-year-old actor claimed he leapt “in the air with joy” after learning US President Donald Trump had tested positive for coronavirus.

The US President and his wife Melania confirmed they had tested positive for the deadly virus on Thursday, after Trump’s chief aide Hope Hicks contracted Covid.

Dominic’s comments came under fire, with many pointing out that Kate’s own husband, Derek Draper, is currently hospital-bound after the virus wreaked havoc on his internal organs.

The 53-year-old was admitted to hospital with Covid back in March, and since then has been in a state of “minimum consciousness” after waking up from an induced coma.

Sharing an article about the backlash from viewers, GMB host Piers made it clear he didn’t approve of Dominic’s remarks.

He said: “Imagine telling someone whose own husband is lying in a coma from coronavirus that you ‘jumped for joy’ when you heard others had caught the disease?”

Dominic appeared on the morning news show to discuss his role as an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust, only for Kate to ask him for his response to Trump’s Covid contraction.

Recalling his reaction to the news, The Wire actor said: “Well I did slightly leap in the air with joy.

“I think the phrase is “what goes around comes around”. I just hope it doesn’t interfere with him being elected out of office that’s all.”

He continued: “Well there’s an element of schadenfreude I suppose.

“I’m not a fan of his, as you can probably tell, and I just hope Biden stays healthy and gets the presidency as quickly as possible. I think Trump is a catastrophe for America and the world.”

Taking to Twitter, GMB viewers were distressed by the comments, with many pointing out the insensitivity of the remarks in light of Derek’s condition.

One said: “You could tell Kate Garraway wanted to cut that interview with Dominic West after his Trump comments however she had to remain professional.”

“Comments from Dominic West ref Donald Trump – appalling. Shame on you GMB for allowing this interview to continue,” added another.

And a third fumed: “Dominic – a little insensitive in tone initially when talking to Kate.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV
