Sam Smith slammed for branding friends at a football match 'lads'

Singer Sam Smith has been slammed for branding friends at a football match “lads”.

The “non-binary” star posted a pic from the stands of Craven Cottage, the home ground of Fulham FC, and captioned the image: “Good old day at the game #LADS.”

But fans blasted him for calling the group “lads” – a term usually used to describe blokes who identify as men.

One fumed: “Lads? Don’t assume their gender you pig.”

Another chimed in and cried: “Lads? Didn’t think you used language that identified gender.”

The Stay With Me singer was declared non-binary last year, meaning Sam does not identify as either male or female.

In an Instagram post at the time Sam said: “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

But some of the pop star’s fans struck a more lighthearted tone.

One said: “Only thing fluid at that game was Barnsley’s passing.”

While another poked fun at Fulham, who lost 0-3, added: “Did you just identify yourself as Craven Cottage?”
