Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones felt he lost one of his children when his daughter transitioned from girl to boy.
The 45-year-old went through a “grieving process” and had to fight his prejudices when 15-year-old Lolita Bootsy became Colby.
But the family was “learning a lot” from the “scary” experience, he said.
Colby, who initially came out as a lesbian before transitioning, has remained at an all-girls’ school.
Kelly, who also has daughters aged 12 and three, told Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast: “For a while it was becoming more and more intense and I remember getting upset one night and I felt I sounded like an animal because I couldn’t work out what was going on.
“You actually go through a grieving process because you feel like you’ve lost your daughter and you’ve gained a son and then you get responsible for the siblings and how they’re going to deal with it. And the grandparents.
“I didn’t really know what I was dealing with but the only thing you can end up getting to is acceptance.

“It’s the resistance to everything and your own upbringing or derogatory terminology you used as a kid – all that comes into your head the minute you hear the word ‘transgender’.”
The singer-songwriter said Colby had inspired the band’s video for Fly Like An Eagle, in which a young girl similarly opens up to her own dad.
He added: “The school have been amazing supporting the whole thing.
“We are all fully supporting it.”
