Suzi Quatro has battled loneliness her whole life but says it's helped career

Rock legend Suzi Quatro has told how she has battled crippling loneliness her whole life.

The singer, 70, confessed has felt alone ever since she was a youngster – despite growing up with four siblings.

She said: “Lonely is a common theme for me, which is a little confusing because I was from such a huge family. In all honesty, I always felt like the odd one out.”

Suzi has also had tough times during her first marriage to fellow songwriter Len Tuckey.

She added: “The most lonely you can be is when you are with someone and still feel alone. In this case it is better to be alone. Lesson learned and if not, learn it.

“Being alone in a relationship is the worst kind of lonely.”

Despite finding loneliness tough, Suzi credits it for making her a star.

The star, who recorded song Lonely Is The Hardest in 1979, said: “I talk a lot about lonely. It’s something I have known my entire life. I always feel lonely. It’s a constant. It is like a comfortable pair of jeans that I never want to throw away, because they still fit. I think if I ever lose this lonely, I will not be the artist I am.”

She added: “I had a very creative time in the late 80s, early 90s while my marriage was falling apart. Creation always saves me. Like I said, if I ever lose the lonely, I die, simple as that.”

Suzi’s book Through My Words is out on July 27 through New Haven Publishing.
