X Factor's Janet Devlin says alcohol addiction drove her to suicide attempts

Former X Factor singer Janet Devlin has revealed that, during her addiction to alcohol, she attempted to take her own life a number of times.

The starlet previously revealed that she had been an alcoholic at the age of 20, but during Tuesday’s Loose Women shared the troubling news that she had attempted suicide.

The 25-year-old was asked when she realised that her drinking had got so bad and, after a nervous laugh, Janet replied: “Maybe the failed suicide attempts.”

She explained: “I don’t know the moment it got really dark.

“But I just woke up one day with a bottle of gin under my pillow, every day.

“Before I went to work I would have a drink – it then went down hill for me.”

The songstress went on to say that she hadn’t planned the suicide attempts, saying that they came about after a night out while she was drunk.

Janet said that she was worried that her mum was always at home waiting by the phone for some bad news.

She told the Loose Women: “I am so glad I am not causing her the same pain now.”

In March of this year, Janet opened up about her alcoholism for the first time.

She said in an honest YouTube video: “I knew I was an alcoholic when I was 20. I went to my first meetings when I was 20 years old and I got sober when I was 20 years old.”

The redhead added: “”I was in the privileged position to learn I was an alcoholic young. My rock bottoms happened earlier in my life than most people’s.”

Janet went to her first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting when she was 20 and “became a person again” after going to 90 meetings in 90 days.

Now she’s gearing up to release an autobiography and more music.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV
