A Place in the Sun guests leave viewing abruptly over problematic swimming pool

A Place in the Sun property expert Jean Johansson had a tough time finding Maria and Andy a holiday home in Famagusta, Cyprus.

In Thursday’s episode of the Channel 4 show (May 20), Jean had a budget of £140,000 to work with and found five promising villas, although not all of them were warmly received by the couple.

During the first viewing, Maria and Andy asked to leave the house before looking at any of the bedrooms.

The couple were clearly unimpressed with Jean’s choice, a three-bedroom villa on the market for £113,983, and let her know exactly why the property didn’t work for them.

“I expected it to be a lot more modern, actually,” said Maria.

Andy said: “It’s a bit too dark for my liking. I like a bright and airy house. It feels a bit old world. I’m not feeling it as a home to live in.”

Jean then asked about the swimming pool, which the couple had seemed doubtful about because it was in the front garden rather than behind the house.

“How big an issue is that pool out the front?” she asked.

Andy replied: “It’s quite a big issue. If I want my pool bar I don’t think the neighbours would be too happy.”

“Should I show you around the rest of the property?” said Jean, sensing they were not at all happy.

Andy responded: “I think it’s not for us, so maybe move on?”

Fortunately, things went a lot better at property number two, a two-bed detached property in Avgorou with a private swimming pool.

It didn’t have an ensuite bathroom, which disappointed Maria, but the couple said it was their first contender.

The remaining three properties didn’t tick all of their boxes, with one being “too overlooked,” one above their budget, and another having a “tucked away” and “unsociable” kitchen.

Maria and Andy decided to make an offer of £15,000 below the asking price for property number two on the grounds it needed “cat-proof” fencing installed for their pedigree pet.

It was rejected, but after lots of phone calls with the agent, Jean finally got them an offer accepted at £128,000.
