Hollywood legend Angelina Jolie was left in a state of disbelief after hearing the activism work carried out by a 13-year-old on The One Show this evening.
Emily, who started transitioning four years ago currently runs an LGBTQ+ club at her school, as well as sending out LGBTQ+ centred books to schools across the country in a bid to raise awareness.
Emily has been campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights to ensure that people in a similar position to her, do not feel isolated.
During a discussion, she revealed that when she began her transition four years ago, she didn’t know that there other people who were transgender.
Angelina said: “There are so many extraordinary young people around the world, they need to know about each other, they need to know about their rights and they need to know how to call on us, what to demand from us and how best to do it, to get the strongest results.”
Speaking to the Maleficent actress, Emily said: “As you may or may not know, I am transgender, I’ve been working on collecting LGBTQ+ books for schools and charities.”
Amazed by the youngster, Angelina responded: “Emily, you’ve taught me something.”
She continued: “There’s a few schools I work on internationally and I honestly haven’t really checked the libraries for representation.”
“I’m going to do that, as soon as we get off this call,” the movie star added.
Closing her conversation with Emily and fellow young activist, Christina, Angelina went on to say: “Christina, Emily, let’s keep in touch.
“[It’s] Such an honour to meet you both, [I] love everything you’re doing, very impressive, you should be so proud.”
Speaking previously to Planet Radio, Emily said: “If a child or young person is trans or wanted to be, you should support them no matter what, because at the end of the day, we’re all people and there’s nothing really be fighting about.
“We should all have human rights, there shouldn’t be second class people.”
Discussing her transition, Emily told the local radio station: “Since I was nine I started to go to those meetings and it really helped me out.
“It’s been four years, almost five since I started going there it’s changed my life because I’ve got to learn about those people who have struggles and talk about it to people who can actually understand my problems as well.”
The teen added: “It’s good to be visible and all transgender people should have their own visibility and voice.”
Angelina herself is a strong activist and philanthropist, working with several charities which has seen her be recognised by Her Majesty The Queen, who personally awarded Angelina with the insignia of her honorary damehood during a private ceremony.
