Anthea Turner claims obese people are 'damaging' their health with junk food

Former Blue Peter presenter Anthea Turner has recently slammed the British public who may be classed as overweight, going as far as to say they are ruining the NHS.

Anthea, 60, initially sparked controversy when she took to social media, sharing a cartoon image of an overweight woman, sitting on a mobility scooter telling a young female to wear a face-covering as she was “putting her health at risk”.

Shortly after her initial tweet, Good Morning Britain’sPiers Morgan slammed her, branding her “despicable” following a social media storm with some claiming Anthea had been fat-shaming.

However, despite deleting her initial tweet Anthea has unleashed a blistering attack on those who are overweight.

“I find it really difficult and struggle to understand how someone who was lucky enough to be born with a good, functioning working body could then willy destroy it,” she told The Sun.

She went on to tell the publication that her image was not intended to offend the disabled community, merely stating that the lady in the mobility scooter was affecting her own health by eating the junk food on display.

The former GMTV presenter added: “This was never meant to be about people who are overweight through no fault of their own.

“This is about those who are not adopting a healthy lifestyle at a time when it’s more important than ever because we have a very worrying obesity problem in this country.

“A healthy body is truly the most precious thing we have. I find it very sad that someone could abuse that by willful damage.”

Andrea went on to say that in order to protect the NHS which has been under strain over the past year, we need to “look after ourselves”.

The controversial star also said that eating fruit such as a banana will be better for somebody instead of picking up a delicious doughnut.

She has since taken to her Twitter page, penning: “Some interesting comments, which all come back to, the NHS is there for people who don’t have a choice and the rest of us have to take some responsibility in clearing the path for them.”

Statistics show that those who have a BMI tighter than 40 are at a 90 per cent increased rate of death, should they contract the deadly coronavirus.

It’s claimed that over two thirds or 63 per cent of adults across England are overweight or classed as obese.
