Antiques Roadshow guest floored by value of painting worth thousands of pounds

Antiques Roadshow returned on Sunday night with more members of the public taking to Kenilworth Castle in a bid to find out how much their hidden treasure could be worth.

One guest got more than she bargained for when she was told the value of an Iso Rae painting she had been hiding away in recent years.

She begun: “Well, the painting belonged – originally I believe – to my paternal grandparents.

“It was back in about 1981, may mum and dad were actually watching the Antiques Roadshow at the time and somebody brought in a painting by an artist called Iso Rae.

“My father got very excited and said, ‘Ooooh, we’ve got one of those in the attic,’ and mum was like, I really don’t believe it.”

Sure enough, the guest’s father did possess a painting belonging to the artist.

However, when quizzed by Grant on whether the painting was up for all to enjoy in her house, she admitted she wasn’t its biggest fan.

She laughed: “Erm, I quite like it… my husband hates it! I’ve got to be honest.”

“Oh dear!” Grant exclaimed before she continued to explain the difference it had made viewing the painting outside.

She said: “I think it’s quite interesting because at home we have quite a dark living room and it looks completely different, bringing it out here in the light.

“Honestly, it’s like a different painting! At home, it seems very dark and very dingy but I think is why my mother had an attempt at cleaning it, allegedly.”

The guest told the antiques expert her mum had tried to clean the painting with Vim, which had left her concerned there may damage

“Obviously, best not to use that sort of chemical on any pictures and always best to get professional advice but here we are in Kenilworth Castle and looking at that signature, I want to take you to Australia.”

Grant explained how the artist was actually born in Melbourne and went on to study there, labelling her “quite an important Australian painter.”

He suspected the work was also slightly unfinished due to the appearance of the painting.

After some more analysis, it was time for the all-important valuation, which left the guest lost for words.

“I’m going to immediately go straight in and tell you I think it’s worth £4-6,000,” he said.

“Oh my goodness, really? A couple of hundred I thought maybe, if we were lucky!

“Well, better take good care of it then,” laughed the guest.
