Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton recently opened up about her struggles with mental health, revealing she suffered a breakdown after the birth of her fourth child, ending up in psychiatric care.
After divorcing her husband Riad Erraji in 2013, the star said she “lost the plot a little bit”.
Appearing on the Mindkite Podcast she said: “I was married for seven years, got divorced, lost the plot a little bit, went through some mental health ups and downs, and then I had my daughter in 2014.
“When I had my little girl and I had a full breakdown and I was under the care of a mental health team, the care of a psychiatrist.
“It was then, I was just like, ‘We can’t keep doing this Tash. You need to sort your s*** out.'”
Natasha had suffered previously from postnatal depression after the birth of her first son, Josh, in 2002.
Postnatal depression is common after having a baby, occurring in more than one in every 10 women within a year of giving birth.
Despite common belief, postnatal depression can also affect partners and fathers.
Signs of postnatal depression can be a lack of energy, trouble sleeping, and difficulty bonding with your baby.
Natasha’s strength to open up about her history with mental health benefits both her fans and the general public as an open discussion on the topic reduces stigma.
If you believe you or your partner may be suffering from postnatal depression you should contact your local GP as many health professionals have techniques to help.
Born in Liverpool, Natasha started performing as a child, before joining the girl group Atomic Kitten in the late 90s.
Natasha replaced Heidi Range in the line up, performing alongside Kerry Katona and Liz McClarnon as the group toured the UK and beyond.
Their debut album, Right Now, was released in 2000, and their track “Whole Again” proved the group’s most successful single.
