Bake Off star Matt Lucas announces he is now officially a German citizen

Little Britain star Matt Lucas has announced he has become a German citizen thanks to his grandmother’s heritage.

The Great British Bake Off host took to Twitter to share the exciting news as he proudly showcased his welcome gift from none other than the German Embassy.

The 47-year-old opened up about his family history with his 1.2million followers on the social media platform on Tuesday afternoon.

He included a snap of a badge which displayed the British and German flags as he proudly announced his new citizen status online.

Matt penned: “My grandma fled Berlin in 1938. Having been offered citizenship, I have just been to the German Embassy in London to collect my Certificate of Naturalisation.

“I am officially Anglo-German. They gave me some Gummibarchen and this lovely badge. Now to choose a German football team.”

And fans soon showed their support for the comedian’s online post as they flooded his tweet with congratulatory comments.

One user penned: “Well done … celebrations with the Jurgenator,” with a subtle nod to this week’s star baker on the Channel 4 baking show, Jurgen.

It comes after Matt showed off his singing talents when he treated viewers to his brilliant rendition of The Flintstones’ theme tune in German.

However, the TV star’s love for his German roots didn’t entirely go down well with Bake Off viewers, as fans of the show raised their concerns online.

For the special episode the Little Britain star and his co-host Noel Fielding dressed up as the German band Karftwerk and performed in German accents at the start of the episode.

But it appeared as though Matt had been bitten by the accent bug as he continued the terrible accent throughout the show.

And some eagle-eyed viewers believe they spotted the disgruntled German contestant Jurgen looking less than impressed as Matt continued with the poor impression while filming.

Viewers soon slammed the comic on Twitter throughout the baking show, to which he responded to the outcry of comments online.

He replied: “I am Anglo-German. I am a citizen of both countries, with passports for each, so I’ll do a ropey German accent any time I like.

“Mind you, I’ll probably also do a French accent and an Italian one, if I fancy. Cause acting innit.”
