The Great British Bake Off winner Nancy Birtwhistle has claimed contestants of the show have to submit ‘nine weeks’ worth of work’ before ever entering the tent.
The baker, who won the fifth series of Bake Off in 2014, appeared on This Morning on Wednesday alongside other previous winners of the hit baking show, Edd Kimber and Peter Sawkins.
During a conversation with This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, the trio discussed last night’s premiere of the new Channel 4 series.
At the end of the segment, they were also asked to pick out their early favourites in this year’s line-up of bakers.
When asked to name her favourite, Nancy said: “I just felt sorry for Tom because I think as a viewer you don’t appreciate that the person that goes out first has also submitted nine weeks’ worth of work.”
In response to Nancy’s claims, Holly cringed and said: “Oh my god. Don’t.”
Nancy added: “Nobody wants to go first.”
Phil later said: “That is heartbreaking.”
Daily Star has reached out to Channel 4 for comment.
Tuesday night’s premiere episode of The Great British Bake Off saw Tom eliminated from the show.
Following his exit, Tom said: “I definitely am proud of myself, and I don’t say that very often.”
On This Morning, Edd revealed he liked the look of Jürgen, who was this week’s star baker.
Edd said: “Jürgen seemed to have good flavours and I think flavour is one of the most important things.
“If you’ve got flavour and you know your technique, they’re the two solid foundations.”
Peter said he liked the look of Giuseppe and Maggie.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV. The Great British Bake off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
