BBC Breakfast forced into major format shake up amid Boris' Christmas Party scandal

BBC Breakfast were forced to ditch their usual schedule after one of their guests turned down their interview – as the government’s Christmas party scandal rages on.

Wednesday’s Breakfast (December 8) was fronted by presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, and they told viewers that they had been expecting to speak to MP Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, about the anniversary of the vaccination campaign.

They explained that they usually speak to politicians at 7.30am on the show every day, which is an opportunity for viewers to get answers from government ministers on the issues that matter most to them.

However, that sadly wasn’t the case on Wednesday as it turns out the senior Conservative MP had turned down the interview, leaving the breakfast show notably quiet in his absence.

Jon Kay was far from pleased, and he definitely didn’t let the issue slip as he informed his listeners why the show wasn’t running as usual, before taking a number of digs at the government during the show.

He said: “We would normally speak to a minister at 7.30 here on Breakfast this morning and answer questions [like that] and hold politicians to account…”

Sally chimed in: “Every day, more or less…”

Jon agreed: “Every day, pretty much. We were hoping that this morning that Health Secretary Sajid Javid would be available to talk about the anniversary of the vaccine campaign.

“He’s not joining us this morning and we’re not expecting any other government ministers now.”

Sally then made a tongue-in-cheek plea to any other relevant guests who might be watching the show who could fill in for the politician.

She said: “Althought for anyone who’s watching, you’ve still got time!”

Later on in the show, Sally re-iterated that nobody had been made available to speak to them, and the pair even displayed the usual Westminster graphic seen during their political interviews.

The pair took a dig at the government as they showed the lack of politicians appearing on the screen, with Jon remarking: “The camera’s ready, the seat’s there…”

It comes after reports that the government hosted a Downing Street Christmas party during the lockdown last year.

Now, a clip of senior No 10 staff, such as former press secretary Allegra Stratton, were joking about holding a festive bash as they rehearsed a press conference.

Downing Street has insisted that no such party took place.
