BBC Breakfast suffers awkward technical blunder during Desmond Tutu death segment

BBC Breakfast welcomed Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby to chat with host Roger Johnson about the death of Desmond Tutu, however, the show suffered a live technical blunder.

During Boxing Day’s programme, guest presenter Roger Johnson did his best to control the audio blunder but they had to postpone the interview with the Archbishop because of it.

Roger was on shift during the regular presenter’s Christmas break and explained that the show would return to Justin after they asked IT to fix any issues.

During the chat, Roger introduced Justin by saying: ” A couple of hours ago it was announced Archbishop Desmond Tutu has died age of 90.

“I’m delighted to say Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby joins us this morning. Thank you for taking the time to speak to us. It’s the loss of a very charismatic figure…”

After this, the channel descended into chaos as the BBC broadcasted muffled audio as Justin spoke.

The cause of death of the famous campaigner has not yet been revealed after it was announced Nobel Peace winner Desmond died on Sunday.

This comes a day after presenter Naga Munchetty apologised to viewers after a technical error caused a live interview to come crashing to a halt.

During the Christmas Day special, the 45-year-old broadcaster was joined via video link by a care home resident who was preparing to spend the festive day with his daughter before returning and isolating.

However, the heart-felt interview was cut short after the internet connection between the studio and the resident’s care home appeared to cut out as they spoke about coronavirus testing.

While speaking to resident Ron, Naga was left speechless after the signal cut out, meaning that viewers saw a frozen image of Ron and Julie as he discussed his Christmas plans.

“Aw, that’s a shame, I’ll tell you exactly what Ron is doing,” said Naga before explaining that Ron would be visiting his daughter to celebrate Christmas Day.

Shortly after the brief interruption, the signal cut out again as Ron was explaining that it would be the first time he would be seeing his daughter for the first time in six months.

However, after explaining that this year would be a “very different Christmas” compared to last year’s in lockdown, the signal cut out again.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am
