BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty red-faced after being corrected on-air in 'cringe' chat

Naga Munchetty was left red-faced on Friday’s instalment of BBC Breakfast, as she was corrected live on-air by Shakin’ Stevens.

The host was presenting the show alongside Charlie Stayt when she brought in CBeebies presenter Andy Day in to chat about his potential – and rather unexpected – Christmas hit.

But, with Shakin’ Stevens also appearing via video link to chat about his iconic single Merry Christmas Everyone, things soon turned awkward.

Naga kicked off the interview by saying: “Let’s talk to someone who knows a thing or two about Christmas at Number 1 – Shakin’ Stevens joins us – good morning to you!”

She went on to introduce Andy, and began by quizzing him: “As we saw there, you’re throwing your hat into the ring. How did that come about?”

The awkward portion of the show began in full force, as rather than Andy answering the question, it was Shakin’ Stevens.

Interrupting the conversation, he began: “Well, it’s been like this every year. Are we talking about Merry Christmas Everyone?”

Laughing, Naga explained: “No, we weren’t yet, Shakin’, we were just gonna figure that out!”

The studio erupted into laughter – but Naga had another question for the music legend, as she mused: “Can I just ask you something? It feels really odd to call you Shakin’, is that how I’m supposed to refer to you?”

And the musician replied: “No, it’s not. In conversation it’s Shaky.”

Blushing Naga said: “Oh, sorry. I apologise.”

Still, she bravely forged ahead as she went on: “I was just going to get from Andy how he came about this Christmas single, and then I was going to come to you and ask you about you knowing everything about it because of having a Christmas Number 1. Is that all right?”

“Yeah, sorry about that,” Shaky replied.

Later, Charlie decided to quiz Shaky on the competition around this year’s chart battle, with artists including ABBA, Ed Sheeran and Adele all in the running to hit the top spot.

He began: “Shaky, your competition is a certain Ed Sheeran, he’s got something with Elton John. So a bit of competition out there this year!”

Shaky answered: “Yeah, competition. Hey, they get released and you just wait and see what happens really, and take it from there. You have to be very sporting about it.”

Fans on Twitter, however, were less than impressed with the interview, with one penning: “Blimey that was cringey!”

“It’s Mr Stevens to you, Naga!” another quipped.

“Shaky’s always good value on these things!” someone else giggled.

As another fan couldn’t resist posting: “Oh Shaky… u ok hun?”

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
