BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent was forced to offer her co-presenter Dan Walker a stern warning on Monday morning, after he almost let slip a swear word live on-air.
The presenting duo were discussing Dan’s upcoming Strictly stint when things nearly turned too explicit for morning telly, with Dan showcasing a snap from his Instagram account of what he wears for rehearsals.
It was announced the Breakfast host would be part of this year’s celebrity line-up live on the show, leaving his usual partner Louise Minchin astonished – and betrayed – that he hadn’t told her ahead of time.
After Dan’s absence from BBC Breakfast to present an Olympics-themed morning show and then to enjoy a family holiday, Sally gushed: “We’ve missed you!”
She continued: “You’ve had a really busy weekend…”
Dan explained: “I’ve had my day one of Strictly Come Dancing, which was… Well, have a look at this picture.”
Dan could be seen on screen in an all black ensemble, with his toned thighs visible in a pair of what looked to be skintight shorts, standing with his hands on his hips.
Sally was quick to ask the question on everyone’s mind, as she begged: “What’s going on there?”
“That was day one. I never realised, actually, that these things exist. I’ve never climbed into a shirt before. That’s a shirt, attached to pants,” Dan told her.
“Apparently that’s called a shants.”
Clearly disbelieving, Sally asked: “It’s called what?”
“Shants,” Dan repeated.
But Sally issued a stern warning once she realised how close the word was to another, less TV-friendly term: “You need to be careful about that.”
Dan agreed: “Very careful how you pronounce that.”
Dan’s picture soon transitioned into a pair of trousers, as he quipped: “They’re trousers. You might have seen those before!”
But Sally was left bereft to learn that there wasn’t more glitz and glamour in Dan’s outfit, as she said: “I’m disappointed that’s not a bit more glittery! Will you not be in something more sparkly?”
Dan explained: “Under studio lights it was! It was fastened up to the back, because I get my chest out on two occasions every couple of years – when I go on holiday.”
The duo gave viewers a further giggle as Dan shared a snap of fellow Strictly celeb, competitive swimmer Adam Peaty, who had donned a glittery dress while checking out the show’s wardrobes.
“How intimidating is this?” Dan asked, referring to Adam’s impressive muscles as they bulged out of his outfit.
Sally joked: “What’s the first thing you notice about this picture, Daniel?”
“That he’s got similar biceps to mine?” Dan quipped back. “It’s rather intimidating – I booked a session with a personal trainer straight away after seeing that.”
BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
