BBC News anchor caught out wearing shorts and deck shoes live on air

A BBC News presenter was spotted keeping his cool by wearing shorts and deck shoes while filming in the studio on the hottest day of the year.

Shaun Ley left viewers shocked when he appeared on Wednesday’s (June 2) news programme in a rather unusual work attire.

Hosting the 11pm news bulletin, the presenter was caught out by cameras baring his legs under the desk while keeping his suit jacket and tie on.

After the intro, he says: “Hello wherever you are from the world, welcome for joining us on BBC News. I’m Shaun Ley.”

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Shaun’s outfit in a side view as the camera pans across the studio.

A screenshot was shared onto Twitter as a viewer asked: “Is BBC news reader Shaun Ley keeping his cool by wearing shorts? And if so, were viewers meant to find out?”

Another commented: “I as a kid always thought newscasters weren’t wearing much from the waist down, I now have proof.”

A third mentioned the hot weather and said it’s understandable why Shaun was wearing shorts.

“Fair play,” a fourth added. “Just seemed odd to pan in with this shot to – ‘expose’ him.”

On Wednesday, London saw highs of 26.6C – making it the hottest day of the year so far.

But the hot weather is likely to be followed by a thunderstorm as the Met Office issued yellow warning across parts of southwest England and southwest Wales.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “The thunderstorms could bring lots of lightning, some hail, as well as some heavy rain, and with the half term there is an increased number of tourists in this area.

“The thunderstorms do then push north-eastwards into the Midlands and across more of Wales, but they also ease and break up, so these places will see some showers but they won’t be as intense.”
