A BBC newsreader’s deadpan joke about the “highlights of 2020” had viewers in stitches on New Year’s Day.
Simon McCoy told BBC News fans today, January 1, there would be a “special programme” with footage of all the best parts of one of the most miserable years many people can remember.
“Let’s just have a look,” he says.
Nothing shows up on the screen behind him, and seconds later he faces the camera and says grimly: “Exactly. It’s farewell to 2020.”
The footage was shared on TikTok and Twitter, with people greatly entertained by his emotionless delivery of the gag.

One person joked: “Simon McCoy speaking for 7.5bn people here…”
“Wow I feel like 2020 just got told off by its parents,” quipped another person.
“That was hilarious,” said a third fan.
Another person commented appreciatively: “McCoy is a legend!”
He previously raised eyebrows with a joke about Princess Eugenie’s baby news, having previously mocked a pregnancy announcement from Prince William and Kate Middleton as “not really being news”.
