BBC Strictly star Rhys Stephenson admits live breakdown was supposed to be 'cute cry'

Strictly Come Dancing star Rhys Stephenson has revealed exactly what happened during his emotional breakdown which took place after he performed the Waltz.

On Saturday night, Rhys performed with partner Nancy Xu and let his feelings all out on the dance floor.

Talking about what happened on the Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two, he chatted to host Rylan about the affair.

Rylan said to Rhys: “I think every single person in the country just wanted to give you a cuddle.”

To which Rhys replied: “I don’t know what it was… I know when it happened and it was midway through that dance and there was a moment where I just thought I was really happy, I’m at peace…

“I’m not stressing about scores and I think because it was a slow dance I was able to enjoy that moment.”

Host Rylan then asked: “You got so emotional, what hit you?”

“I don’t know, I broke down like Bruce Willis in Friends. I couldn’t stop. I thought I’m going to cry now and thought it was going to be a cute little cry with tears, but no it was sobbing, and then Claudia pulled out the grandad card which was a low blow,” explained Rhys.

This comes after Rhys, 28, took Instagram to apologise for his show of emotion after he cried on the dance floor.

The CBBC presenter wrote: “So that was a bit of an over pouring of emotion, sorry for becoming Bruce Willis in Friends but I think it hit me properly where I am and what a dream come true all of this is.

“Thank you for enjoying our waltz, it was the first time I felt absolute peace on that dance floor.

“Also, @claudiawinkle, playing my grandparents after!? That was low.”

Many of Rhys’s followers were quick to flock to the comment section, including some of his co-stars.

A second added: “NEVER APOLOGISE FOR SHOWING YOUR AUTHENTICITY.”

While a third penned: “You did another awesome job out there tonight loved it once again. Keep going keep smiling you’ve got this!”

And a fourth typed: “You were magical and had me in tears too before you’d even stopped dancing. Elegant, graceful & full of feeling.”
