BBC viewers were left distracted during Monday night’s episode of Vigil when they spotted a “suspicious” editing gaffe involving the cat of Rose Leslie’s character.
The BBC One detective series, which is set in Scotland, premiered on Sunday night and focuses on the events taking place on the HMS Vigil – a Royal Navy submarine.
The series got off to a controversial start, as Line of Duty star Martin Compston’s character (Craig Burke) was killed off within eight minutes of the show starting.
Episode two, which aired on Monday, followed senior detectives Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) as they tried to get to the bottom of the suspicious death of crew member, Burke.
However, as the tense episode unravelled, it seems like a lot of fans on social media were more interested in Rose Leslie’s on-screen cat.
It comes after a dramatic edit in one scene, shared by Rose’s character and the white fluffy ginger pet, made the feline look like a central character in the grisly murder plot.
In the scene, Detective Longacre receives a call from her colleague Porter (Reuben Joseph) as she tries to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death on the ship.
Longacre’s cat could be seen sitting beside her during the call, but suddenly the cameras cut to an intense close-up of the creature – making it look emotionally involved in the scene.
Eagle-eyed viewers rushed to social media to comment on the hilarious moment, with many taking to Twitter to suggest that the pet must be up to no good.
One fan wrote: “That cat looks shifty.”
A second penned: “Pretty sure that cat is running things.”
A third commented: “At this stage, I reckon the cat has something to do with the murders.”
A fourth agreed and wrote: “Have decided the cat did it.”
A fifth added: “Is the cat behind all of this? Why did the camera focus on the cat?”
Later in the episode, Detective Longacre’s apartment gets burgled, and a violent fight breaks out between her and the robber.
Tragedy unfolds at the end of the episode two, as she later discovers the dead body of Jade (Lauren Lyle) floating in the water.
After a heartbreaking scene which sees Longacre try to resuscitate her, it’s clear she has already passed.
